I fully agree with you, but modifiying an existing robot kit is part of the "fun". Here are some photos of ALEX-1:
This is the head, front view, containing a microsoft webcam, utrasonic sensor, and laptop speakers, one on each side:
This is a photo of the head top view, showing the "inside"
This is Roboard attached to the robot's back, left view showing also the accelerometer on the inside:
This is the right view of roboard, from the inside you can see the 5amp fuse for the dynamixel bus and also the USB2Dynamixel which is inside the aluminium cover together with roboard:
