Well I order my upgrade on Tuesday from Robosavvy and it arrived at the office Thursday lunchtime. Brillianr service thank you.

So last night I set about converting my old original 18 servo humanoid to a Type A one. Wasn't too bad but I did end up mod'ing one bracket to act as a mount point for the rear of the chest cavity. Was a small mod to shorten it so it did not foul the large brackets that make up the hip rotoation. Once that was all done I set about trying to mount the controller and battery with a little modification as possible.

Well the result is shown in tha attached photo's (sorry about the quality I only had a phone camera to hand and it was dark).



It is a bit Heath Robinson, and really need some custom brackets to mount the battery, processor and shoulder servo's to. Such a shame Robotis don't sell a frame upgrade pack from comprehensive to Premium, oh well. The reality is it is working and I am still looking at ways to mod the existing frames to improve it, although I think I will end up producing some custom frames.

Next thing is to try and interface the BlueSmirf to it so I can still control the new robot via bluetooth. Looks like it shouldn't be too difficult with the information on Robotis' site. :D

Having had the upgrade for just over a week I decided that a better solution for mounting the new components was required.

I had a look at the pdf/cad files on Robotis' site and was able to determine the basic size for the chest mounts in the new premium kit (I think it was frames F51 and F52 - and the size was 66mm x 44mm x 90mm but that is from memory).

Knowing the basic sizes I was thinking of fabricating an aluminium bracket from scratch when I came across an aluminium box from Maplin that I thought may do the trick. The box is the LF10L and is 70mm x 33mm x 102mm.

Basically, I have removed the ends of the box, and mounted the two shoulder servos directly to the main part that forms the front, bottom and top. I did link the shoulder servos together using the CM510 so ensure that I could mount the processor onto the servos with the aluminimum back between them.

The main part of the box is connected to the hip servos using the two holes for the pivot point opposite the servo horn. I spaced these a little with two small gromets so the base of the aluminium box didn't bend. I didn't use accurate measuring to determine the servo holes but put double sided tape on the brackets and then just press fitted them to the servos. With the servos connected together using the CM510, I positioned the servo assembly into the box. When I removed it the brackets were stuck to the inside of the box and I drilled through the brackets to create the mounting holes.

It seems to be working well but enough waffle and words, this is what it looks like:
