Bioloid & Robotis is now the most popular forum on RoboSavvy; if you use the number of posts and the number of topics as your metric.

Sorry Robonova-1 but this has been a long time in coming. The Bioloid Premium has never been answered to by a Robonova-II.

Time to crown a new champion.

Your post in this new topic was the one to tip the balance.

When I first looked at humanoid robots a couple of years back I was considering a Robonova, very nice looking brackets and finished bot, reasonably priced. Shame no hips as standard but can be added.

At that time the post count for Robonova was far ahead of all other platforms, It obviously made the platform more attractive to me as there were lots of hacks and mods going on.

After researching what is possible with the different platforms (with respect to active control experiments) I opted for Bioloid, the AX12 servo seems very good spec for the price with scope for very smooth actions. I can't wait to experiment with these servos.

I just recently ordered a premium Bioloid from Robosavvy and according to tracking it should be here tomorrow. The tracking also has an entry "Damage Recorded" . I hope its just carton damage but with all the recent ice in the UK I have imagined a forklift skating out of control and wreaking havock. Oh well, all will be revealed. :)

I nearly bought a few different robots including a Robonova but I eventually got a Bioloid and I'm happy with it,

It wont be long before those AX12's have you thinking about AX18's or drooling after RX24's :D

Hope your Bioloid arrives in good shape Fraser

Thanks RoboFlop, I'll keep you posted on its condition when it arrives.

I'll have to wait a while for my bank account to "heal" but yes I think I'll enjoy getting some upgrades.

Am I right in thinking only AX18s are drop in compatible with the premium kit brackets?

Fraser.

Yes ax18s can be used in place of ax12's...I think they are identical apart from the motor inside. Take out a 12 and put an 18 in...hips and knees seem to be where my bioloid would benefit.

heres a couple of youtube vids showing ax18s...

Check out some of UncleBob's vid showing off RX24's on his Knight Templar II too...

just got my bioloid today and looking forward to modding it just a quick question in those videos do you know if they are using the standered CM-510 Bioloid Premium Controller or the CM-700 Controller. as i was thinking of getting the cm-700 but money is always a issue and if i can get away with the 510 with the new servos then at least i can start programming.

The only significant advantage of the CM-700 over the CM510 is the support of RS-485 servos (RX,DX, EX ranges). The AX12 and AX18F are both TTL interface, so the CM-510 or CM-5 are fine.

I would wait and not buy a CM-700 unless you need it now. When it comes clearer on the CM-730, new servos, and the Dynamixel 2.0 protocol, then the controller choices for high end servos may be different.

Is your bioloid premium or comprehensive ?

The CM-730 is the new Cortex-M3 32bit sub controller used on the Darwin-OP. It supports the new RX28-M servos which also have 32bit micros inside and use the Dynamixel 2.0 protocol to 4.5M.
http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/project/darwinop/Overall/DARwIn-OP_Specification_Ver1.0.1.pdf

The processor used on the CM-730 is about the same price as the one on the CM-700. The CM730 does have integrated Gyros and acclerometers which will make it more expensive, but if truly open source design, then price should be reasonable.

CM-700 works with standard RX28. RX28 has RS485 interface and supports dynamixel 1.0 protocol. CM700 supports both RS485 and TTL interface servos.
RX28-M servo is TTL interface (not RS485) and supports both Dynamixel 1.0 and 2.0 protocols. It has magnetic position encoder and operates up to 4.5 Mbps
The CM-700 should be able to talk to the RX28-M using Dyanamixel 1.0. I don't think it can do 4.5M and neither can the USB2Dynamixel.

I guess things will come clearer on Dynamixel 2.0 over the next month.

Thanks, it's really nice to know that you've got me covered!

I'll certainly be buying more bits and pieces from you guys to upgrade my bot in the future.

It's still not arrived but that's because it was a national holiday here in Spain yesterday. If there is any problems with some kit parts being damaged in transit then I'll let you know.

Thanks again! Fraser.

Some months ago I started to quietly follow the "robonova - bioloid" forum race.

I love building my own creations. I started in 2005 with Lego Mindstorms, so in 2007 I have no doubt choosing Bioloid. But I were not sure if this will be only for a little "hacking" community.

Well, it seems that the combination of an humanoid and modular kit is interesting for a growing and more than little comunity.

Beside that, and IMHO, I think Robotis are evolving their products very wisely and timely. They already have surprise me pleasantly several times, with hardware upgrades like premium, great software updates, very good online help, linux support,...

Now I look forward for exciting and wonderful new surprises, like the Darwin platform :)
