Hello all 8)

I know this topic might have been discussed in different shape and form on here, however my search was not as satisfying as I wanted.
So I decided to post a thread and ask for un-biased opinions and suggestions.

I am a robotic enthusiast with beginner knowledge and experience with robots. I would like to purchase a robot kit for myself to step by step progress and advance. I consider myself a true beginner.

Two choices stood up for me :
Bioloid Comprehensive or Premuim kit and Robobuilder 5710K Red Edition w/ Full Sensor pack

I realized there is some price difference which quite frankly is important to me as well.

What I really need to know is some true and honest opinions regarding which one is more suitable for beginners, can accomodate intermediate and some advance programing in future, has good buold quality and support ?

Please state your choice with the reasons. Many thanks

Well, respect the price difference, you should keep in mind that:

- Bioloid includes 2 additional servos (about 35£ each AX-12)
- 12 of the 16 Robobuilder servos are Torque: 8 kgf.cm, versus AX-12 15kgf.cm (The other 4 Robobuilder are 11 kgf.cm)

The community around Bioloid is larger than Robobuilder. You can see it, for example, in their Robosavvy's subforums.

I use Bioloid since august 2007. I bought Comprehensive, the Premium upgrade when it appeared and several spare parts (Zigbee, frames,...).

My main criticism is that that they don't open source their firmware and don't offer any way to execute motions from code except using their RoboPlus Tasks, but it is too much limited for medium or advanced programming.

Robotis have been improving their software and hardware over the years, so I will choose Bioloid.

Robobuilder have some interesting features like PID and open source firmware (this one is very interesting to me), but I haven't ever could play with them, so I haven't an opinion about it.

Hope it helps :)

Thank you very much ! :D

Very informative and straight to the point response. I can see Bioloid has more resources available. I guess I am still far from getting into too in-depth programing for a while, so I won't be worry about firmware for now.

Now my mission is to find a special discount price on the Bioloid kit or buy it second hand from a trust worthy person. I checked on ebay but doesn't seem anything special going on.

Does anyone know who has it with the best price? I am from New Zealand and no local shops have this kit :(

Sorry for digging up an old post but this info was helpful to me as well as I pretty much have the same questions as Bennz had :)
