Considering the overhead to operating servos, there are some options that can work equally well for motion control.

Some of these include:

Linear Actuator
(Ball-Screw Assembly)
Electromechanical Solenoid
Muscle Wire
Hydraulics
Pneumatics
PM Motors
Stepper Motor

Can anyone add to the list?
