Assuming you're in the UK, I bought some 30mm wide strips of aluminium (1mm thick) as a custom sale from eBay:

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/123offcuts/

They'll do custom-cut pieces to order, suited me fine.

What sort of servos are you going to use? This may steer you one way or the other when it comes to control boards etc.

If you're going to use 'standard'-control servos (i.e. RC pulse) then I'll have just the devices soon... 8)

If you're in the USA it's hard to beat use-enco.com for 5052 sheet aluminum.

Nobody has the heart to tell him this is a pipe-dream?

A 17dof humanoid, regardless of how light you get the chassis, will not be able to support itself + controller + battery using those servos. Not trying to be a downer, just don't want you to waste $300.

There is no free lunch with humanoids.

I didn't spot the '9g' servos when I first replied - good point Tyberius.

Take a look here at what Ayu did at reasonable cost with 9g servos. At least it will set your expectations for these servos.

That's actually fairly impressive!

Two questions- onboard battery? Did he ever get it to actually walk?

Again, not trying to be negative here, just realistic.

Well doing a 1-legged stand could mean he got it to walk. On the movie you can see the batteries are sitting on the table in the back, But I think he could manage a 7.4v 900mah lipo battery

I did not hear from Ayu in quite a long time, so never saw it walk.
The video of the 1 leg butterfly compared to that of the Robonova, does not look as strong, but I think some walking action could be achieved.

The barriers to walking are not just physical. To develop gaits for a new robot is a long demanding task. Especially when using servos like these where the current position cannot be read.

It is an interesting mirror to previous thread on scaling up robots and whether the servo torque to size ratio is linear.

I hope someone gets this working
