I believe that the designs are simply taking advantage of the double knee joint which looks to be placed as close as possible for the most rotation of those two servos. I built my robots legs like that once (designed the aluminum parts and all) and it looked very similar. To be able to rotate past the foot and hip area, the knee needs to be situated farther away. Otherwise the robot couldnt squat down.
